IEEE 754 Float Converter
Convert between decimal and IEEE 754 bit patterns at 32-bit single and 64-bit double precision. Accepts decimal, 0x hex or raw binary, then splits the pattern into sign, exponent and mantissa with colour coding, alongside hex, the exact decimal value and the neighbouring representable values. Handles ±0, infinity, NaN and subnormals.
The format is detected automatically: 0x prefix means hex, a 0/1 string of exactly the bit width means binary, everything else is decimal. Decimal input also shows the neighbouring representable values, which is where precision limits become visible.
One bit: 0 is positive, 1 is negative. That is why +0 and -0 are different bit patterns yet compare equal.
8 bits for single, 11 for double, stored with a bias (127 / 1023). All zeros means subnormal or zero; all ones means infinity or NaN.
23 or 52 bits holding the fraction, with an implicit leading 1 (except for subnormals). This is why 0.1 is inexact: in binary it is a repeating fraction.
